Gross Severin Severinovich

Gross Severin Severinovich (19.10.1852-15.04.1896) – a Polish narodnik revolutionary and local historian.
He graduated from St. Petersburg University in 1877. For actively participating in the underground revolutionary organization of Polish youth, he was arrested in 1882 and exiled to Western Siberia for 5 years under police surveillance. Initially, Gross settled in the city of Esil, and in 1883 he moved to Semey.
In 1883, S. Gross settled in the city of Semey with his wife and was under police surveillance there. When S. Gross was exiled to Semey, the Governor-General of Tobolsk noted, "There were no unpleasant behaviors from the exiled Severin Gross and his wife Anna, who were under police surveillance in the city of Esil, but both of them are politically unreliable, especially S. Gross's opinions are harmful."
One area of the diverse public activity of political exiles was the scientific study of Altai, in which S. Gross actively participated. A bright example of S. Gross's scientific research activity was his involvement in the work of the statistical committee established in Semey in 1878. He studied the old customs of the Kazakhs and traveled to the settlements of Kanoner, Big Naryn, and Vladimir, as well as the Don and Semiyar stanitsas between 1883 and 1885.
About Gross, the narodnik S.P. Shvetsov expressed his opinion: "Gross is the largest among the political exiles in the Steppe region at that time... He stands out among his peers in age, being around forty... Very educated, patient, and with a restrained character."
The materials collected by S. Gross were included in the first edition of the research titled "Materials for the Study of the Legal Customs of the Kyrgyz. Material Law," published in 1886. In the city of Semey, S. Gross had a rich library that others also used. He actively participated in the construction of the local history museum house.
In June 1884, S. Gross spent a month in the village of Abai in the Chingiz district. The great poet had previously been introduced to S. Gross by E. Mikhaelis. By the end of the 1880s, Abai had befriended Severin Gross. The great poet provided the Polish exile with extensive information about Kazakh customs.
