Kamen Orazalin

(1920-2008)

Kamen Orazalin, who tasted the words of the poet Shakarim, was a contemporary of the great scholar writer Mukhtar, and a true guardian of the spirit of Abai, was born on June 16, 1920, in the Kylshybek pasture of the Kundyzy village, Abai district, Abai region. After finishing high school in 1939, he was drafted into the army and participated in the Great Patriotic War. At the age of 20, the young man, while fighting for his country and life in the war, became passionate about the literary art of great figures like Abai, Shakarim, and Kokbay, holding both the pen and the weapon.

Having returned safely from the war, Kamen Orazalin graduated from a teachers' institute in 1947 and worked as a teacher at the local high school in his native village. Alongside teaching children, he also pursued writing. In 1950, he made his literary debut with the novella "Zheksen." In 1959, his novels "Ak Zhazyk," which focused on the theme of the virgin lands, "Koktem Salqyny," which depicted collectivization, and his historical book "A Journey to Abai's Village" were published.

In the tradition of Abai-Mukhtar, Kamen Orazalin held a unique place: he felt a duty to remain faithful to the great tradition and to continue it. In 1972, he wrote a four-volume novel about Mukhtar Auezov, dedicating 20 years to research and 35 years to writing without interruption. "After Abai" is his most significant work, preserving the essence and nomadic form of Kazakh worldview.

The writer, who spent half a century nurturing young minds at the Abai High School, continued to write even after retiring.

In 2025, with the support of the governor of Abai region, Kamen Orazalin's collection "A Journey to Abai's Village" was published by the "Foliant" publishing house as part of the "Abai Way" library project.

The veteran and esteemed elder of Kazakh literature, Kamen Orazalin, passed away in March 2008. He was awarded the title of "Honored Teacher of the Kazakh SSR," as well as the Orders of the October Revolution, the Third Class "Glory," the "Parasat" Order, and many medals.

Kamen Orazalin is one of the few writers who made the world of Abai the core of his life, deeply portraying the legacy of the great poet in artistic prose. He distinguished himself by authentically depicting the fates of historical figures surrounding Abai and the spiritual essence of Kazakh society. In the writer's works, love for the homeland, humanity, national consciousness, and the education of future generations are reflected as central ideas.

The creative and spiritual connection with Mukhtar Auezov had a significant impact on Kamen Orazalin's writing path. Valued as a writer who artistically systematized the "post-Abai period" in Kazakh prose, he considered it his civic duty to honor Auezov's trust and continue the Abai tradition.

Kamen Orazalin's works are a valuable legacy that masterfully combines historical facts and artistic imagination. Through his writings, he not only preserved the spiritual continuity of the Abai school but also left behind works of great educational significance for national literature. Today, the writer's literary heritage is still studied and valued as a precious treasure that leads its readers to spiritual heights.
