Abai Region Kazakh Musical and Drama Troupe named after Abai

The History of the A. Kunanbayev Kazakh Musical Drama Troupe of the Abai Region

The A. Kunanbayev Kazakh Musical Drama Theater is a significant cultural institution that laid the foundation for the development of Kazakh theater art, holding great historical and cultural importance.

A notable event at the origin of Kazakh theater art is the staging of the play "Ainlіk-Kebek" in 1917 under the leadership of writer and playwright Mukhtar Auezov in the "Oikuduk" pasture of the Semey region. This work is recognized as the first professional production in Kazakh dramaturgy and established the foundation of national stage art. This historical fact was fully acknowledged in its time and is identified as an important milestone in the history of national culture.

In the 1920s, the "Es-Aymaq" troupe was established, recognized as the creative team that founded the theater. Its members included the outstanding artists of our nation - Amire Kashaubayev, Isa Baizakov, Jumad Shanіn, and Kalibek Kuanishbaev. This troupe officially received theater status in 1934. On May 25 of that year, the theater opened its curtains with Ilyas Zhansugirov's play "Kek."

On August 15, 1945, the theater was named after the great Kazakh poet, educator, and philosopher Abai Kunanbayev. This is a testament to the recognition of the theater's contribution to the development of national spirituality and culture at the state level.

The works of M. Auezov, G. Musirepov, B. Maylin, G. Mustafin, R. Gamzatov, Ch. Aitmatov, and other world-class playwrights have been staged on the theater's stage. The plays considered gems of our national literature, such as "Ainlіk-Kebek," "Karagoz," "Kozy Korpesh - Bayan Sulu," "Ayman-Sholpan," and "Boltirik Boryk Astynda," have become part of the theater's golden repertoire.

The A. Kunanbayev Kazakh Musical Drama Theater is a cultural institution of great historical significance that holds a special place in the spiritual and cultural life of the Kazakh people. Many artists who have flourished on its stage are now successfully working in theaters and cultural institutions across the republic. The theater team continues the advanced traditions of the older generation and faithfully serves the national spirituality.
