The City Library of Kurchatov
The state institution "City Library of Kurchatov" was established in 1993 on the basis of the garrison library. During those years, the library was managed by Valentina Leonidovna Tryakshina, who served as the director.
In the early years of our country's independence, the library system in the republic faced significant difficulties due to the economic crisis and the limitations of the state budget. Between 1992 and 1999, the total number of libraries in Kazakhstan decreased by four times. Nevertheless, during this challenging period, several important decisions were made to preserve cultural institutions.
The transition to a market economy had a particularly severe impact on the social sector. The city of Kurchatov also experienced these challenges. The residents of the city remember well the harsh winter of those years. In 1993-1994, due to an accident at the thermal power plant, many buildings were temporarily heated by heaters. In such circumstances, preserving the book collection required exceptional responsibility and organization.
As a result of the diligent work of the library staff and Valentina Tryakshina, the main book collection was preserved. Additionally, the collections of the Shagan library and the children's library, which was closed during that period, were accepted and merged. As a result, rare and valuable editions of classical literature have been preserved in the city library to this day.
According to the decree No. 6 of the Main Administration of the city of Kurchatov, Semey region, Republic of Kazakhstan, dated February 1, 1995, the City Library of Kurchatov was established based on the database of the former "Officers' House" library.
Currently, the library is located at 20 Olimpiyskiy Street in the city. Since 2014, Kusembayeva Korklan Maidankyz has been serving as the director of the library.
The library's collection is annually replenished with books published through state orders, and starting from 2023, with books by local authors published under the "Abai Zholy" library project with the support of the regional governor. The residents of the village also lend a helping hand to the expansion of the library's collection by donating books from their personal libraries.
