History of the Museum

The founder and first director of the museum is Akjasar Konybek Slyamuly, a cultural figure of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Year of establishment: December 17, 1986; Year of opening: May 18, 1993.

Total area of the building: 2032 sq. m, exhibition area: 594.0 sq. m.

The museum collection consists of 5930 storage units.

Number of employees: 12.

The Akshuat Historical and Local History Museum was established based on the order No. 385 of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR dated December 17, 1986, at the suggestion of the former Semipalatinsk Regional Department of Culture as a district branch of the Semipalatinsk Regional Historical and Local History Museum and was opened on May 18, 1993. According to the decree No. 350 of the East Kazakhstan Regional Akimat dated January 1, 2005, it was reorganized into the State Communal Enterprise "Tarbagay Historical and Local History Museum" of the Department of Culture. The museum structure is equipped with departments of nature, ancient times, modernity, and an exhibition hall. In 2004, the museum staff was awarded a Certificate of Honor from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan for their significant contribution to the development of museum affairs.

On October 18, 2022, due to administrative-territorial changes, the museum was reorganized from the State Communal Enterprise "Tarbagay Historical and Local History Museum" of the East Kazakhstan Regional Department of Culture to the State Communal Enterprise "Akshuat Historical and Local History Museum" of the Department of Culture, Language Development, and Archives of Aбай Region.

The museum consists of halls of nature, ancient times, modernity, and an exhibition center. The second domed floor of the museum building features a circular exhibition hall where exhibitions of artworks from the collections of museums in various cities of the country are organized.

Exhibition Activities

In the museum's exhibition hall, exhibitions from other museums and works from artists' collections were organized. These include an exhibition of applied art from the collection of jeweler Serjan Bashirov (Almaty), an exhibition by artist Erkin Nurazhanov titled "The Humor of the Drawing," a photo exhibition "Astana Meray" from the collection of the Museum of History of the City of Astana, as well as a painting exhibition from the East Kazakhstan Museum of Arts.

As part of regional cultural events: at the assembly of Turkic peoples in the Katon-Karagay district and in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk during the days of the Tarbagatay district. Traveling exhibitions were also held in schools and institutions of the district.

"Jewelry Heritage of Tarbagatay," "Collection of Golden Relics," "Aybyn," "Literature of the Native Land," "Secrets of Stone Signs," "High Art," "Nature of Tarbagatay," "National Currency - a Symbol of an Independent State," "Tәуелсіздік тұғыры," and others.

Thematic exhibitions were organized about the activities of leaders of republican and city museums, which became a valuable source of information for museum workers and young local historians.

In September 2015, a painting exhibition from the collection of the "Nevzorov Family" museum was held, showcasing 20 works.

In May 2016, a traveling exhibition titled "Hunting, Falconry, and Shooting Skills" was held in the city of Ust-Kamenogorsk.

In January 2018, a month-long exhibition of works by artist A.T. Shokanov was organized.

In August 2018, an exhibition of the Saka leader "Golden Man," dated to the IV-III centuries BC, was brought from the collection of the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In 2024, an exhibition titled "Gold of Elemek Sazy" was organized from the collection of the East Kazakhstan Regional Historical and Local History Museum.

In 2025, in celebration of the 180th anniversary of Abai Kunanbayev, the museum organized a traveling exhibition "Wonders of Akshuat" in the Abai district.

Main Tasks and Functions of the Museum

The main activity of the enterprise is aimed at preserving, studying, and popularizing museum items and collections for the implementation of cultural, educational, and scientific-research functions, as well as for the broad representation of the historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The enterprise is not entitled to engage in activities that do not correspond to the goals and objectives established in the Charter.

Transactions made in violation of the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan may be declared invalid at the request of authorized bodies.

Cultural and Mass Events

In 2025, 90 events were held, including 38 exhibitions, with 3020 visitors to the museum.

According to the annual plan, events were organized in connection with state and national holidays: Nauryz, Day of Gratitude, Victory Day, Constitution Day, Abai Day, Independence Day, and others.

On May 16, 2025, the "Night at the Museum" event was widely celebrated, including concert programs and exhibitions.

On May 12, 2023, a republican scientific-practical conference dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the museum was held.

On August 1, 2025, a republican competition "Best Guide" was held in honor of the 70th anniversary of cultural figure K. Akjasar.

The collection of the Akshuat Historical and Local History Museum represents a unique set of material and spiritual values that comprehensively reflect the natural, historical, socio-economic, and cultural development of the region.

The museum collection is divided into the main fund and auxiliary fund.

The main fund includes historical, archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, manuscript-documentary, photographic, and artistic exhibits that reflect the history of the region from ancient times to the present.

The archaeological fund contains tools, household items, and decorations found in the region.

The ethnographic fund includes traditional clothing, household items, works of decorative and applied art, and musical instruments.

The documentary-manuscript fund consists of official documents, letters, diaries, rare books, and publications related to the history of the region.

Photo and video materials visually reflect the social and historical life of the region.

The scientific-support fund includes copies, models, reconstructions, and methodological materials.

The collection of the Akshuat Historical and Local History Museum is an important basis for preserving regional historical memory, instilling national values in the consciousness of future generations, and conducting scientific research.

The total number of items in the Akshuat Historical and Local History Museum's collection is 5930 storage units, including 2456 items in the main fund and 3474 items in the auxiliary fund.
