The "Regional Historical and Local Lore Museum of the City of Semey" of the Aбай Region Department of Culture, Language Development and Archives, branch in the village of Kabambay, Makancha District The village of Kabambay is located at the very southeastern border of Kazakhstan with China, away from the main highways, opposite the famous "Dzungarian Gates," at a considerable distance from the regional center, and even more so from the capital of the republic – Astana. For over a century, it has been neighboring the healing and fabulously beautiful Lake Alakol. Every year, the flow of tourists and vacationers, not only from all corners of our country but also from nearby and far abroad, continues to grow. Moreover, in recent years, local residents have also shown a keen interest in the history of their homeland, issues of its research, and the development of local lore. Considering these circumstances, the museum staff, led by the museum director K. Sabyrbaev, made considerable efforts to organize the branch department in the village of Kabambay. The official opening of the department took place in 2019. The department has seven exhibition halls: "Urjhar Princess," "Archaeology," "Sacred Places of the Aбай Region," "Kabambay Batyr," "Ethnography of the Kazakh People," "Culture of Nomads," and "Nature." The number of visitors grows steadily every year. After the holiday season at Lake Alakol ends, the number of visitors noticeably decreases, but the staff continues to work on attracting students and local residents to the museum. Regular meetings with representatives of the creative intelligentsia, exhibitions, round tables, and thematic excursions for schoolchildren are held. In connection with the formation of the Makancha District, the Urjhar branch department became a separate branch at the end of 2024.
